Crekvina
...where heritage becomes a part of you.
This open space with imposing walls was originally intended for the church of St. Mary. Never finished, the church was designed for as many as 4,000 visitors. The Jesuits started building it, but it was never completed because the Jesuit order was dissolved. Its walls preserve the legend of a curse uttered by a widow who, like other residents, had to carry stones and sand all day long for the construction of the church – after which the church allegedly collapsed.
Today, Crekvina is one of the most beautiful stages under the open sky, which is touched by the stars at night. This unforgettable and mystical locality is home to numerous cultural programmes that change throughout the year, and just beyond Crekvina you can step into the deep forest that surrounds this beautiful city.
Consolidation and rehabilitation of the western wall was carried out on the Crekvina square, in order to prevent the degradation and deterioration of cultural property of important importance for the city. Paving of the ground, decoration and furnishing of the western sacristy, and installation of lighting were also carried out, in order to ensure a modern and attractive presentation of the site, and to increase the possibility of use during different seasons. After the implementation of the project, a significant increase in the number of visitors is expected due to better infrastructure conditions, attractive presentation, as well as new programmes.
The newly renovated location is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
