Once hidden by dense laurel forests that gave it its name, the Old Town of Lovran, surrounded by luxurious hotels and charming villas, is one of the brightest gems of the Opatija Riviera. The spirit of a medieval Mediterranean port and bustling trading hub still lives on in the narrow streets and houses packed within the former city walls. The maritime heart of Lovran is a tiny town harbor called Mandrać. Among the colorful boats of various sizes, types and colors, the traditional wooden vessels stand out – most notably the Lovran guc, which has become a symbol of the region’s maritime tradition. This simple wooden boat was created in the mid-20th century in the workshop of an inspired shipwright, Nino Gašparinić. Small, lightweight, agile and versatile, the guc quickly became a favorite among local fishermen. Today, it also serves as a means of transport for modern travelers – tourists. In a short time, the humble guc became a symbol of local maritime heritage and the proud people of Lovran built it a new and safe home. Visit the House of the Lovran Guc to learn all about its creation, significance and preservation from oblivion.

The indigenous Lovran guc boat holds significant cultural and historical value, symbolizing the connection between the local community and its past. According to historical sources, its creator was the self-taught shipwright Nino Gašparinić, who adapted and refined the design of the traditional Korčula gajeta by incorporating his ideas and tailoring the boat to the desires of its commissioners. This process resulted in the creation of the Lovran guc. Known for its excellent maritime capabilities and safety even on rough seas, the boat first served as a fishing vessel, like other traditional boats of the time. However, with societal changes and the rise of tourism, it also began to be used for leisure activities. The Lovran guc was an integral part of traditional life in Lovran.

Recognizing the importance of preserving and promoting the Lovran guc and presenting it more prominently to the public, Lovran has found a fitting home for the boat near the equally historic Old Town Tower. The Old Town Tower stands at the entrance to Lovran’s historic core. It is a remnant of the town’s medieval fortifications and a testament to its rich history. The tower is a massive structure with a square base, originally preserved only up to a certain height, with an additional section built in the 17th century.

This project envisions activities aimed at expanding and connecting the existing exhibition spaces of the Lovran guc and the Old Town Tower.
